Culture and museums in Innsbruck

Innsbruck and Tyrol have had an eventful past. You can gain an impression of the history of this region of the Alps at the numerous museums.

Ferdinandeum Provincial Museum of Tyrol

Founded in 1823 and rebuilt and extended in 2003, the Provincial Museum of Tyrol unites modern architecture with an historic structural fabric as equally as international and regional collections. There are seven main spheres for you to explore: Roman Times, art history, graphical works, works of musical history, library, historical collections and a scientific collection. As a unique aspect, the Provincial Ferdinandeum Museum of Tyrol shows you exquisite works from the Netherlands, from Rembrandt to Breughel, and individual pieces of craftsmanship.

Imperial Hofburg

The Hofburg in Innsbruck was made a Baroque residence during the reign of Empress Maria Theresia. The core of the castle is the Grand Hall. You can see the frescos by Franz Anton Maulpertsch in this sumptuous ceremonial hall. You will find valuable furniture and paintings from the time of the Hapsburgs in the Hofburg rooms.
The imperial family repeatedly resided in this interesting piece of period history between the 15th century and the end of the monarchy in 1918.

Maximilianeum - the Golden Roof

The Golden Roof is the emblem of the city. Located in the Innsbruck Old Town, the Late Gothic oriel of the building is roofed with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles. The German king and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Maximilian I, had it commissioned. At the Maximilianeum Museum, which was opened in 1996, you can learn a great deal about the emperor and his milieu. Portraits, medals and goldsmith works make the exhibition an interesting excursion destination.

Ambras Castle Museum of Art History

Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595) had Ambras Castle re-erected in the Renaissance style. The unique Ambras collection also dates back to Ferdinand II. It is thus one of the oldest museums of all. The paintings by Cranach, Tizian, van Dyck and Velásquez make visitors’ jaws drop today. The castle is surrounded by a spacious park, which also serves in summer as the venue for the Ambras Castle concerts. A truly royal ambiance spreads before you at Ambras Castle and its grounds.
